The initiative completed six months, with statewide response
Pune : Ta . ( 4 ) In the last six months, more than six thousand people from all over the state have been able to talk freely on the helpline “Sakal Sobat Boluya” to seek guidance on various mental health problems. For the past six months, a team of fifteen expert counsellors, psychiatrists, and psychologists have been providing psychological support to the callers on the helpline and providing them with proper professional counselling and guidance round the clock.
During lockdown and normalcy, depression has been on the rise and stress is one of the significant reasons for this issue in houses and families. This helpline has provided a platform for people to express themselves and get proper guidance, so the “Sakal Sobat Boluya” helpline has become a positive platform for those who face stress and problems.
Sakal Media Group’s “Sakal Social Foundation” on behalf of “We are in this together” activity, Puneet Balan Group and Karve Institute Of Social Service in collaboration with the organization of the Center for Mental Health and Disability – Stress Management and overall mental health and issues guidance “Sakal Sobat Boluya” is a 24-hour free helpline that was launched on August 3, 2020.
The highest number of callers to the helpline across the state is 48.
- 4% of people are from Pune district, followed by 10.
- 1% of the population are from Sindhudurg district
- 5% of the population are from Mumbai
- 5% of people are from Nagar district.
The proportion of people in Kolhapur district is 6% while the proportion of people in Sangli and Nashik districts is 4% and 2% respectively. Also, the proportion of district-wise people is less.
After checking our callers, the male class accounted for 61 % of the helpline callers. The proportion of women is 38 which was 7%.
Depending on the age group, the proportion of people in the age group of
- 18 to 29 is 11.6 %,
- 30 to 49 30.5 %,
- 50 to 69 27.9%,
- 70 years of age 7%
Also, 65% of people were from urban areas, 26.2% of the population was semi-urban, and 8.8% of the people were from rural areas. Also among the callers, 42.1% were graduates, 16.4% highly educated. The proportion of postgraduates was 9%.
The private sector ranks first among the 6,000 people who called the helpline to seek guidance. These callers were followed by housewives. Retired, and senior citizens are in the third position.
There is also a significant number of professionals, students, government employees, and people who have lost their jobs due to the lockdown.
The calls regarding mental health and mental disorders mainly involved relationship stress, marital problems, financial problems and unemployment, which lead to depression, anxiety, worry, and fear.
